Silver River Day Trip

2018 dates

Saturday March 24

Monkeys in FL?

Around the spring of 1938, a colony of rhesus monkeys near Silver Springs by a tour boat operator known locally as "Colonel Tooey" to enhance his "Jungle Cruise". A traditional story that the monkeys were released for scenery enhancement in the Tarzan movies that were filmed at that location is false, as the only Tarzan movie filmed in the area, 1939's Tarzan Finds a Son, does not contain rhesus macaques.

Paddle the Silver River

All of Florida's spring fed rivers are beautiful for the clear views of the flora and fauna below the surface but Silver River has one thing that makes it extra special.....monkeys! Released in 1939 they adapted to Florida warm temperature and the colony grew. They can be seen in the trees and swimming at various locations along the 5 mile river. Also seen are anhingas, egrets, hawks, manatees, otters and more. The area is undeveloped except for the put-in boat ramp and head of the spring at Silver Springs State Park.

The details

Meet at Kayak Amelia outpost 6:30am (we plan to get on the road 7am SHARP). We'll all ride in our comfy van for the 2 hr. drive to the boat ramp. The first half of the trip will be upstream, a bit of a workout but easy enough to enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife. There will be a short break half way for a hearty snack. At the spring head we'll get out for lunch and a good stretch of the legs. The return trip will be an easy float with the current for more wildlife viewing. On our way back home we'll stop at our favorite burger place for dinner (you are responsible for dinner). We should get back to the outpost about 7pm....tired but happy and rejuvenated!
