We don't see Manatees that often but Scott, one of our guides, had a very unusual encounter with a group of 7 sea cows one day. They approached his kayak and came right up to him, grabbing on with front flippers. He started to leave a few times and they followed until he finally hit the beach.

For all of you just dying to spot a Manatee from a kayak. This is what you usually see (a nose). If you happen to be looking when they take a breath then you'll see one. I don't want to mislead anyone Scott's encounter was a unique one! They are out there..... it's all about timing, sharp eyes and a little luck.
What's in that crab trap???

On a recent trip we encountered an unusual 'catch' in a crab trap on a dock. A young raccoon (probably after the bait inside) had crawled in and could not get out. Ray carefully unlatched the lid and the furry critter was across the dock and in the water with not even a look over its shoulder.

The Sierra Club's Inner City Outings Program gives kids a chance to explore the natural environment beyond their city streets. The Sierra Club volunteers lead trips to 'wild' places to foster a deeper appreciation of the critters and eco-systems in our area. This year we were able to take two groups of kids paddling. It's hard to say who had more fun the kids or the adults!

Sometimes you're just in the right place at the right time....On a recent paddle near Ft George Island we came upon 5 Roseate Spoonbills!!! What a thrill!!! (Thanks Heather for some fast camera work)
